WHAT’S SO FUNNY ABOUT A MAN IN A DRESS?
Whatever it is, you’ll find it in abundance when Central Park Players opens the 2009-2010 season on Friday, October 16 with the hilarious Leading Ladies by Ken Ludwig. The side-splitting comedy will have the audience rolling in the aisles with this story of mistaken identity and hare-brained scheming as two con men pretending to be women try to cash in on a dying old woman’s fortune.
Since both of the leading characters, Leo (Van Merrill) and Jack (David Riegler) spend a lot of time in the play masquerading as women, some of the biggest challenges in staging the show have involved costuming. Costumer Lisa Hilliard found herself surfing drag show websites just trying to find women’s shoes large enough for Van Merrill’s feet. She finally sent him to local ladies’ shoe departments where the salespeople never batted an eye. And let’s not even get into the part about the fairy wings or the roller skates!
The stars will have to master British accents, falsetto voices and multiple fast costume changes while spouting fractured Shakespeare dialogue. Joining them on stage are Meg (Sarah Fields), Audrey (Eirann Betka) and Florence (Carolyn Bean) as well as actors Bruce Baker, E. Fred Finke and Kameron Klein.
Director Shari Miranda says “The cast has been hard at work rehearsing for the past four weeks, and we’re ready to make ‘em laugh. I dare anyone to sit in the audience and keep a straight face – we certainly can’t during rehearsals! The playwright, Ken Ludwig, has given us another sure hit”.
